Over the past ten to fifteen years, audiobooks have gained immense popularity worldwide. This is particularly evident in the Nordic context, where streaming audiobook platforms have become dominant actors, profoundly shaping both publishing decisions and reading practices. This talk traces the rapid development of this phenomenon and examines what the platformization and shift in reading media means for contemporary book and reading culture. Drawing on large-scale logged reader data, in combination with conceptual frameworks for publishing, audiobooks, and generative AI, the talk explores how people engage with literature in the streaming age and the broader implications that follow.
